Station Kerry
Io Gabe tried to realign the sensors to make sure that the readings that were coming in on Jan's console were correct. Unfortunately, it looked like they were. He looked at Jan with surprised. "Well, the good news is it seems you aren't crazy."
Jan's stressed face formed a frown. "I didn't think that I was. I just can't believe what I am seeing."
Gabe turned back to the console get the sensors to prove deeper into the neayby planet's eye. It appeared to be more than a cosmetic similarity to an eye. It was a physical orb and similar in shape to the average eye. It did not seemed to be filled with capillaries and other defining details of a humanoid eye. It did not seem to be attached to an optic nerve so it was not likely that Jupiter was going to turn into some creature that had been in some sort of slumber for millions of years. He expanded the sensors, which did not seem to pick up any other organs floating in the planets upper atmospheric levels.
"I think we should get a closer look at this," he said as he looked back at her. "Do you think we could use one of the Runabouts to get a closer look?"
Jan brought up a schedule on a console nearby. "It looks like there are a few available if we wanted to do that." There was a questioning tone to her voice as she spoke.
Gabe looked at her with surprise. It was not often that scientist were handed such mysteries, particularly when station in the Sol System. "Don't you want to investigate this?"
Jan looked away a little nervously. She was ashamed of her feelings, but there was something about that eye. Something that instinctively told her there was going to be a problem. Things were not going to go well. "It is my job, of course we should investigate it."
Gabe decided to let the uncomfortable moment pass. He wasn't going to push things even though she had not really answered the question he had asked. He tapped a few buttons. "I have reserved Connecticut," he said. "It should be prepped and ready by the time we get down to the shuttle bay."
Jan nodded as she started downloading information she wanted to bring with her to a PADD. "This could be our big chance to be noticed."
Gabe smiled. He could tell that she had forced the comment, but he knew that meant she was getting a little less nervous about things. "We might even get assigned to a ship exploring deep space if we handle this right," he said as he moved over to her and rested a friendly hand on her shoulder.
Jan couldn't help but laugh. A little of it was nervousness, and a little of it was the ridiculousness of the situation. Who would have thought that finding an eye could jump start a career. "Let's get a move on. We should get out of there before that thing disappears.
A few moments later, the Connecticut slid out of the shuttle bay and made its way from Io to the largest mass in the planetary system. It took longer than most trips from Earth to the Moon, but that was to be expected considering the size differences.
They scanned the eye the whole time. There seemed to be no indication that it was going anywhere. As they got closer a surprising thing happened. For the first time it moved. The portion that would be considered the cornea and iris moved towards them, as if they eye were turning to get a better look at them.
Gabe, who was piloting the Runabout, slowed there approach. "Did you see that?" was the first words that came out of the mouth of his companion.
He nodded as he adjusted the sensors for a better scan. He was surprised by what the readouts were showing. "It seems that the iris is dialating, allowing the cornea to grow.
"I am showing an energy build up in the organ. I does not seem to be a form of energy that I can identify."
A moment later a burst of energy shot out of the eye, and the runabout was gone.
To be continued...
