The change in tone was subtle, but Matt had dealt with peope for two millenia.  He didn't miss it.  "I, umm, would be very honored if you would attend our wedding, sir," he said simply.  "And I was hoping you'd consent to stand for me.  As my best man."

Lasiter regarded the man for a moment deciding just how to respond.  He felt honored by the request, and a very personal one at that.  However, Lasiter felt that attending was inapproperiate after recent events.  He did not want a large security presence at their wedding, and his presence there would make such a security presence a requirement.  But that was more excuse than reason.  What bothered him most was that he had to discipline a friend... the bride no less.  He felt too uncomfortable about going...

Samuel started with a sigh.  "I am honored that you would think to ask me to stand with you at your wedding.  I am truely honored, but I must decline.  My thoughts and prayers will be with you and Carrhae."

Matt kept his face carefully neutral, fighting against the frown that threatened to spread out across it.  "We will, of course, respect your decision, sir," he said.  "But please, allow me to ask you to reconsider, even if you need to answer me later.  I certainly acknowledge that Carrhae's behavior as of late has been a bit... unpredictable.  And I have to take responsibility for most of that.  She's been acting more like a woman in love - worried about her partner - than she has a flag ranking Starfleet officer.  I - and she - fully acknowledge that that is unacceptable, but I think I can assure you, sir, that her behavior will cease to be erratic now that she knows I am well, and that we are to be bonded.  Her actions were not meant to spite you, sir, and they were not personal - though I know that doesn't take the sting out of it."

"You and CArrhae have a lot of history, Sam," Matt said, dropping his tone to that of an old friend as opposed to a Starfleet officer.  "Please understand the predicament I placed her in, and please make whatever allowances you might feel appropriate for that.  But I beg you, don't let this come between the two of you.  I know she agonizes over what she's done for you, and I know she doesn't even understand why she did it, but it certainly was not meant to disrespect you, despite the fact that it did just that."

And then.....

It did not take her long to find Brennan's offices.  She entered the outer
office and glanced about to see if he had someone working there.  Not seeing
anyone at the moment, she went directly to his inner office and rang for
admission.

THe computer annunciator told him it was Carrhae.  He looked to Sam to see what the CinC's response would be.
