"What about your meeting with Admiral Lasiter?"
Soran sighed before answering. "I'm not sure, Admiral. I don't know
him well enough to read him. The meeting was more of a conversation
than an interview, at least any that I have ever had. It left me
with some odd feelings. One in particular was that I was being
compared and judged by his previous chief of staff. May I ask how
long his previous Chief of Staff worked with the CinC?"
"Commander M'Rrenn was Admiral Lasiter's chief-of-staff for over eight years,
but their association for more than 15 years.
"It is quite possible that the admiral was making comparisons. He will be
leaving within the hour to escort M'Rrenn's body home. He has not had
opportunity to grieve.
"That said, I bring two points to your consideration. First, Admiral Lasiter
specifically asked me to review you as a possible replacement. Second, he
already felt comfortable enough to 'converse' with you."
