Thanks to everyone - your help has been very much appreciated. Sorry if I got
surly, but my manager wanted this running, so there was pressure to make it so.

Lessons learned:

#1: Friends don't let friends hit ctrl+c while the installation process of an application is still running and expect the resulting application to be stable and work correctly.

#2: If you find yourself manually changing permissions of configuration files necessary for an application to run, you're DOING IT WRONG. [1]

#3: If you didn't install a machine yourself, don't trust that it was a clean or otherwise a non-one-off install. Investigate! :)

#4: Although the Spacewalk community here I think has gone to great lengths in trying to help resolve this problem, other communities may not have taken the time to do the same. Sometimes if you really need support your best bet is to purchase a support license.

I hope this list is both fair and appropriate for your Friday dose of amusement (or Saturday as it may be in your TZ), if not I apologize and please direct flames to me personally. :)

Thank you Mark for your patience with Spacewalk and for not giving up on Spacewalk. as well as for the apology as Smooge said we know is not always easy!
