> Looking for some pointers on sizing a machine to run Spam Assassin on. > This server will be protecting 2 mail servers, one receives an average
For reference, I have an SA environment that fronts a full GroupWise system of 16 servers, about 10,000 email users, and a peak load of about 5,500 emails per hour mid-day. Believe it or not, we're running this on a Dell GX270 *desktop*, about a 2.5Ghz processor, 512MB RAM, 40GB hard drive, SuSE v8 pro, Postfix, Amavis, SpamAssassin 2.63. It works like a champ, no clogging. In fact, when SBC's network in Connecticut got cut on April 26th and was restored, this box handled just over 11,000 emails per hour for the first two hours, and I saw very little email clogging...I was suitably impressed. Yeah, we've got better hardware coming in to replace it, just to make ourselves feel better (and for redundant power supplies, redundant drives, and more RAM) but I am totally happy with the way this little box has been working. This is my first foray into LINUX; unlike its predeccessor, a Windows NT box running Guinevere and SpamAssassin, this box has been up for about 8 weeks with *zero* problems, no complaints, and a lot of kudos for significantly reduced SPAM...
