We process about 13,000 messages per hour. We have 4 small clustered servers and it will run on only 3. All of them are about 2ghz with 1 gig of ram and normal IDE drives. The multiple server approach is a big help if one goes down it's still able to run normally and doesn't back up the mailservers.

I'm guessing it's the hourly number that's off, and not the monthly? :-) We have a Sunfire 880 with 6 900MHz cpus in it as our mailserver, we handle about 4 million messages a month (and 2.4 million of that is spam).
