I don't think anyone could come up with more than an educated guess, 
because no sample size would come close to representing the whole 
Internet. Nonetheless, here are a few possible sources.

* The FTC has asked for people to forward their spam, but
   I don't know whether they'd release any new numbers on
   request.

* SpamCop has some "live" statistics at
   <http://spamcop.net/spamstats.shtml>

* Other filtering companies (Brightmail, Postini) may be
   willing to provide figures. I know Brightmail's done so
   in the past.

* We have links to a few spam statistics sites at
   <http://www.spamcon.org/directories/email-statistics.shtml>.

I hope that helps! Qualified journalists (such as yourself :) ) can
