I've been having the same problem lately with my iPhone.  For some reason a
contact, who has been in my contact list for many years now shows up as a
duplicate in my Gmail and is deleted from my iPhone ( & Mac Address Book).
I've corrected it three or four times already, but figured it was something
I was doing.  As a side note, it did start doing this when I edited his work
email, if that makes a difference.
But now that someone else is seeing the same thing, maybe it isn't me......
