If you want to live with using google as your caldav server then there is no real need for spanning sync for calendars. The address book also does a reasonable job of sync. The only use case I can really think of is if you want to use mobileme as well (say, for keeping your ipod/iphone in sync over the air) then you need spanning sync to do that.
