I use it to do over-the-air syncing from my iCal to my iPhone, utilizing Google as the intermediary. I could do this without using Spanning Sync via CalDev, but there are a few downsides. One was mentioned (inability to edit appointments). The other is that I don't want appointments I send out from iCal to come from my Google account. I want them to come from a different email account I use via IMAP from my Mac. If I use Caldev, they come from my Google account which I don't want. You can do this with MobileMe too, but I think MobileMe is moving to CalDev. I tried the beta, which uses Caldev, and all my appointments started coming from Mobile Me, which I did NOT want. Plus, as someone else mentioned, Mobile Me is over priced (although you can find discounted prices on eBay).
For contacts, I don't think there is any advantage now, is there? BTW, on a side note.. one bad thing about Google's sync support for iPhone, you can only change recipients on your primary calendar. I use multiple calendars and for those, you cannot access the recipients which kinda stinks....
