I got the 'google reported an unknown error' message to. When I look at the Spanning Sync Preferences (selected by the icon in menubar) I noticed that I'm not signed in but my account says paid and never expires (which is true btw).
Very irritating behaviour. The two contacts I added with my phone have been added to my addresbook on my Imac and synced with googles adressbook.
