I applied the recent update to my SS, with the following unwelcome
developments:
(1) Clicking on the preference pane gave me an error message --
couldn't open the preference pane, thus couldn't submit a report.
(2) Following advice on the SS help page, I manually deleted SS via
the terminal. This worked, insofar as the preference pane was no
longer visible in system preferences when I ....
(3) .... downloaded the installer package and tried to reinstall.
However,
  (a) "The SS preference pane could not be installed because an error
occurred."
and
  (b) "The application SS Uninstaller quit unexpectedly." (thinking
that my manual uninstall wasn't sufficient, I tried the uninstaller in
the package"

I have restarted the computer; no changes to the above. I am running
10.5.8.

At this point I am dead in the water regarding SS. What to do?
