Thanks for the suggestions -- it did seem to be the clustering which I did
install on the machine because I may need it in the future, although am not
running it now.

Hi David -
Along the same lines as Neil's comment, make sure you didn't install
clustering if you don't need it. Running a single machine with clustering
enabled can cause this kind of slowdown.
