In general, metadata is good for this, but if your talking about a magazine,
I'd probably suggest using a property called Edition or Release. Mark it as
searchable.

I'm not sure of the web server requirements for Solaris. I'd assume that
it's the same as CF Server.

Check out wddx.org. I'm pretty sure there is a Java serializer/deserializer.
