Ed,
The main problem with SiteMinder is that it doesn't work reliably. One day
you will be able to create policies and restrict access, and the next day.
Actually, it's usually something like you go to a page you don't have access
to and can't get in. You refresh the browser and you can. Try refreshing
again and maybe this time you can't get in again. This whole time no
variables have changed and obviously the code hasn't changed. The system
just doesn't work.
On top of that it's really slow, especially when doing anything with
policies. And it's not like the processor will get hit too hard. It'll just
take a long time. There are ways to improve performance with Spectra
security, but I haven't yet heard of anyone who is confident that security
is working correctly and won't produce odd results.
With Custom Security, the reliability issue is handled. In all the testing
I've done, if you're locked out of an area, you won't get access to it, no
matter how many times you try refreshing your browser. Working with policies
is no slower than it takes to run a very simple select statement. One of the
main advantages of Custom Security is that it was designed without any
additional parts that Spectra doesn't need, therefore there's a lot less to
go wrong.
I'm sure you can get plenty of SiteMinder horror stories from this list, as
there are many out there. Custom Security is an alternative that's already
built and uses the same API as Spectra, so you can use all your Spectra
references when working with Custom Security.
HTH,
Jason
