Darren,
I'm sorry we don't use btcats or clustering so I can't help there.
However, our main Spectra issue has been in memory consumption. CFAS
consumes inordinate amounts of memory when it runs Spectra on our Solaris
boxes and it looks like a memory leak somewhere. Following Macromedia
guideline we have upgraded our Oracle client, switched a different version
of Apache, removed a lot of caching code, lowered the threads on CFAS to 6,
used code to "clean up" after StructGets() (they leave large structures in
memory), changed all named locks to scoped (we reverted back to names when
this exacerbated the issue).
The largest fixes where re-writes of cfa_contentObjectGetMultiple, cacheread
and cachewrite and these seemed to have slowed the speed of the memory
consumption to a workable level.
If you run into any memory issues when you have Spectra up an running
contact me and I'd be happy to share the code for our fixes with you.
Good luck

Russell,
I'd like to know more about the problems you've been having. We're also
deploying a cluster of three E420's (one devoted to spectra). I'm presently
stuggling with getting all the CFAM stuff to fly (I'm getting core dumps all
over the place trying to get btcats configured) but eventually I suspect
I'll hit the same wall you're smacking up against.

And this has me curious as well.
Any advice for a poor fella and his Slowlaris boxen?
