Is keeping it really an option if I can't even get someone on the phone to
buy it from? I have spent 1/2 of today just trying to talk with someone at
MM about buying another copy of Spectra for a Dev server. I have tried this
in the past as well, nothing, nada.

Messages not returned, Dead-end phone numbers, endless holding.

How am I supposed to buy a copy?

I'm glad to see this thread is provoking more conversation. It is a
useful discussion. I appreciate the FigLeaf folks contributing. I'd
love to hear from other prominent developers in the CF community on the
list if they'd like to toss in an opinion. (You know who you are.
Wink-wink.)

I do not fault anyone for working to make a fair profit. I think Steve
Drucker was forthright in stating his bias. I would have indeed "run
away" from Spectra when MM announced its end except we were caught in
mid-development and well after the money was spent.

I'll agree that Spectra 2.0 was an awesome product. (At least in my
mind.) Macromedia's designation of Spectra as "community source" is
ambiguous. Best I can fathom is that it was a solution to allow for bug
fixes while dedicating minimal MM development staff. If Spectra was
clear to be true "open source" or "community source" represented ongoing
MM support, it might have opportunity to improve and add features.
However, Spectra's current status cripples it. I question how much the
community can carry it further if we don't have the explicit freedom to
do so.

Don't worry Macromedia. I still love you. And Allaire, I'll remember
you fondly.
