I found the problem (at long freakin' last). The answer was in a message from Benoit on Mon 4 Feb 2002. I missed it earlier because it's in French and I was skipping the French messages in hopes of finding the problem in English (after all, I don't speak French, so reading through French answers would be slower, right? wrong, apparently...) The answer is that the user name was different in /etc/ppp/peers/adsl and /etc/ppp/chap-secrets Both files had been changed in the upgrade, but I'd only noticed the problem in chap-secrets because it was more blatant -- there were two lines of login and password information instead of one.
