Btw, about the original post, if the OS powers down also the USB (and the modem of course), then you will probably HAVE TO relaunch modem_run to init the modem again (it doesn't keep the microcode in memory when you power it down, would be too easy). And the fact of killing manually modem_run doesn't mean that you can relaunch it again as the modem is still initialised (so you need to reset the modem ... this famous missing feature).
