right, i'm getting pages of that garbage on my screen now .... (i have to
swap the modem back to the xp box to use the inet :) ) ... and disconnected
it from the internet now.

what device is the usb modem connect to in /dev?? or is it even in there
when it's connected??

Redhat has a handy "adsl-setup" program, as well as "adsl-connect" and so on
... should i be using this, or "pppd" to use the internet?

Daniel
