Right, even more confusing things. I tried to get things working with my laptop last night (redhat 8, 2.4.29 custom kernel). When I fired up modem_run, I got:
modem_run[426]: modem_run version 1.3.1 started by root uid 0 modem_run[427]: Error reading interrupts modem_run[427]: [monitoring report] ADSL link stays stable (down) modem_run[427]: Error reading interrupts modem_run[427]: [monitoring report] ADSL link stays stable (down) modem_run[427]: Error reading interrupts modem_run[427]: [monitoring report] ADSL link stays stable (down) modem_run[427]: Error reading interrupts modem_run[427]: [monitoring report] ADSL link stays stable (down) modem_run[427]: Error reading interrupts modem_run[427]: [monitoring report] ADSL link stays stable (down) (and so on, at about 2 reports/second, until I killed modem_run). I then tried speedmgmt, and this brought the modem up fine. Then, I copied the ppp configuration files over from my other machine, and ran ppp. Using the speedtch driver + pppoatm worked fine, as did n_hdlc + pppoa3. So, I've shown that the ppp configuration is fine, because it works on another machine. I've shown that the modem is fine, ditto. Both machines are able to bring the adsl link up just fine. Both machines claim to send out the initial LCP packet. One gets a response back, and works fine, while the other never sees the response. Can anyone suggest what to try next? Is there some more debugging I can enable to see why one machine gets an LCP response, but the other doesn't?
