First of all, the firmware is uploaded to modem at system startup and is
carried out by driver, so updating firmware in Linux *will not* affect
functionality of modem in Windows. It is thus absolutely safe to update
firmware in Linux. I would guess, that authors of those instructions
just wanted to prevent problems that may be caused by using outdated
firmware, that's all.
