How the firmware is distributed has changed from one file to two files to go
back to one file. This was awfull for a maintainer to make one interface, a
second and a third. But this is mostly the past.
I don't know if this was the reason for the suggested change for Ubuntu.

If you unplug the modem, firmware disappear from the modem, so you can't
break anything.
The firmware may stay inside the modem during a reboot from Windows to Linux
et vice-versa.
