yes, i know how that feels too, its horrid

as someone else wrote, what you need next is to get the X windows system 
up and running, that gives you a
system that looks much more like microsoft windows and is easier to use, 
although will not necessarily solve the problem of
getting you on line with the modem

personally i use Suse, and it was easy to install, and with a bit of 
help from this list, get my speedtouch 330 going, although i think its 
now gone more comercial

so you could use one of the other distributions, or look for a debian 
email list where people will have better exptertise to help you get 
debian going, for example there is a web page at www.debian.org, which 
also points you at a mailing list.

i found this by typing 'debian mailing list' into google and doing a web 
search
