I've got it working now thanks.  I suspended a session, rebooted and then
started the connection manually with 'pppd call speedtch'.
This connected and subsequently the connection started automatically on
boot.  Whether this was coincidence or whether I did something I wasn't
aware of to cure the problem I don't know.
