I've typed in the shell as root chmod 777 /etc/peers/speedtch and chmod 777 
/lib/firmware/speedtch*, but nothing has changed. Maybe have I forgotten any 
other file?
Kppp seems to recognize a modem on ttyS0 (isn't it a serial port?), because it 
begins the initialization, but then it shuts down.

adjust the privileges for the files and it should work fine.... try chmod
777 as root on the files of speedtouch and it should work fine....
