If I wrote an extension, I'd have to do 6 things:

  0) Consult Sphinx wiki to see if someone already did it
  1) Write the actual code
  2) Have some way to comprehensively test the code
  3) Put the code somewhere relevant
  4) Adjust the conf.py for projects to use it
  5) Submit back to Sphinx

Using existing code as documentation only helps for step 1.  In any case
you want to point to good examples of directives and roles.  The other 5
steps need to be detailed.
