You may want to point out in the docs that those are the Ubuntu packages. No doubt other distributions group things differently. >> ! LaTeX Error: Something's wrong--perhaps a missing \item. > > That shouldn't happen. What markup produces the erroring LaTeX output? It doesn't say. If you want to investigate, do the following: $ svn co http://apsw.googlecode.com/svn/apsw/trunk apsw $ cd apsw # The next 3 steps are needed because several documentation files are # generated $ python setup.py build --fetch-sqlite $ cp build/lib.*/apsw.so . # chm build will fail if you don't have wine+hhc, doesn't matter $ make docs $ cd doc $ make VERSION=1.2.3 latex Maybe this is what it is whining about? I can't really tell the difference between markup, its error and warnings and general progress messages. l.933 \end{tabulary} >> My resulting PDF is has poor formatting in several places (parameter >> displays are ugly, tables have text overflowing columns, no table of >> contents, unwanted hyphenation, truncated code). > > That is to be expected with generated text. Generating printable output > fully automatically is very difficult. The table of contents shouldn't really be missing :-) A huge amount of space is wasted on left and right margins. This makes ordinary text paragraphs more readable but leaves little space for code and similar technical content. If monospaced output could be a smaller size (eg 8pt) then it would improve things a lot. I copied the generated PDF to http://www.rogerbinns.com/apsw.pdf so you can see the various issues: Page 1 - Missing table of contents Page 3 - Right margin overrun (needs narrower margins and smaller text to solve) Page 10 - Text runs off the bottom of the page Page 17 - Mangled table Page 18 - Mangled table (will probably change to description lists to fix) Page 22 - (Bottom) "See also" needs to do widow/orphan control Page 23/24/25 - Full justification really pointless and ugly Page 27 - Constructor parameter name hypenized which is a really bad thing to do! Page 30 - No space after bullets in seealso sections, occurs elsewhere Page 30 - filecontrol "Parameters" badly formatted, also occurs wherever else there are multiple parameters Page 37 - List in "Calls" at bottom not aligned (occurs elsewhere too) Page 52 - Another mangled table - no idea how to reformat Page 60 - Mangled table - will probably need to make one after the other rather than side by side Page 79 - Each bit is already numbered, the 17.x doesn't really help Page 87 - Despite promises there is no index, module index or "search page" Between the HTML and CHM I am very happy with Sphinx and don't publish the PDF anyway. I'll also make a ticket pointing to this posting in case anyone wants to revisit the latex/pdf issues.
