I was trying to fit my new steering rack last night but have had all sorts of grief with the knuckle joint. I managed to wreck a couple of bolts trying to get them through the knuckle so I now have to order a new bolt (i'll get a few in case of ruining more. I have managed to get the bolt on to the column but am still struggling with the connection onto the rack. It took me ages trying to coax the column joint and bolt on with added complication of there being no room to work around there! Is there any way that I can make it easier to get the bolt on or do I just have to stuggle on wrecking bolts before I manage to get one to go all the way through? I used liberal sprayings of WD40 to try and help things into position.
I examined my old rack once I had pulled it from the car and the track rod threads were completely rusted away so much so that they were barely recognisable as threads! I can only assume that it is the original rack, track and tie rod ends and that the tracking has not been set for a long, long time! Definitely overdue for the overhaul anyway! cheers, John http://www.spit1500.co.uk/ Yahoo!
