Well - having almost given up - I found out an easy way of doing it..... using a normal spanner and a screwdriver.
Use the spanner head on - right angles to how you usually use it. use a screwdriver put through the other end and turn it using that. You can turn it quite a bit - luckily mine were loose after 4 or 5 revolutions and I managed to do it with my fingers (I guess I have small hands - and strong fingers - I play the guitar) Although this was lucky because the nut at the front of the engine was stiff all the way. The second nut was slightly stiffer and I managed to do it with some thin nosed pliers. Of course, now my manifold is off - I find that I have to replace the other gasket too......
