Don't know for sure, but I suspect those were assembled new with a tool that would look very much like the cardboard tube in a roll of paper towels. You would use it to press down on the entire ring, distorting the rubber, and normally popping it up over the trim ring.
Since your rubber probably isn't new, and if it is new, it probably isn't to oem dimensions, so the above tool wouldn't work correctly for you. However, such a tool would greatly help you in reinstalling your lenses, especially if combined with a softer impliment like the mentioned popsicle stick. My favorite rubber working tool is silicone spray btw.
