Once upon a time (in a mysterious land that may never have even existed except in our rose-tinted memories), these places employed people who knew about cars. But, that takes experince and training, and monkeys who know how to tap a make and model into a computer come cheaper. For 99.5% of customers who just want to replace a specific part on their modern car, that's good enough; who, apart from the Triumph specialists, is going to pay the extra it costs to employ someone capable of helping that last 0.5%?
To be honest, they are just a business, driven by the need to make money like all businesses, and I can't say I blame them - if I ran the shop I'd probably do the same thing. That's just the way things are. I tend to have the opposite approach with these stores - I enter expecting them not to be able to help, but on the off-chance that it will save the postage cost and delay of getting something from a specialist. If they can help, I walk away happy with my expectations exceeded. If they are cheaper than all the specialists (like when I bought an alternator for #5 less than any of the specialists) I walk out jumping for joy! Adjust your expectations, and your will meet with less disappointment. Jeez, I'm almost starting to sound philosophical there!
