Yup, that is also something I have thought of doing. I do have a spare
cheapo tach that I bought to check against the Smith one. Once I get the
Smith out and see what it looks like inside I just might try a internal
swap. I would like to stick with a original, but we'll see what works out
the best.
tnx

Possibly you could get a new or used generic aftermarket tach, rip out its
circuit board,
and install it in the Smiths tach?

Hello...
The Smith electronic tach in my '78 is in need of replacement. At 3500rpm
it
is reading 4500 and it varies. I know that there is suppose to be a
calibration adjustment on the back, but the PO told me that It had died
once
on him and he repaired a cracked PC board in it and also replaces a few of
the
capacitors. Apparently it is using a op-amp chip that is either unmarked
or
does not translate into a common number and there was also something about
it
not having a standard 8, 14, 16 pin configuration.
So if someone has a known good one that they are willing to part with or
if
there is a schematic out there somewhere I'd like to hear about it.
