How many miles on your SL, Don? At what mileage did you switch to
synthetic? I chose not to switch my SL2 for fear of oil consumption, even
though it's now at 82k and doesn't consume anything (pretty amazing for a
96). That's in contrast to my former SC2, which under new ownership seems
to get an oil change in BETWEEN oil changes, it burns so much. My Miata,
however, I run Mobil 1 - partly because I switched the replacement engine
over at 51k miles, and partly because that's the autox/track car, and it
gets driven hard (2 days at Lime Rock with 2 drivers last week, and another
day there this Tuesday!)

If your SL is sucking down oil, you won't hurt it by switching back to dino
oil. It won't fix the problem, but at least you'll save some money on the
oil, and the engine will still get lubricated just fine. I'm still in awe
of the $40 oil changes on my Miata (case of 10w30 Mobil 1 and a Mobil 1
filter). Another good reason for me to keep the SL2 on the cheaper stuff.
:) Castrol GTX, tho, so certainly not bad stuff either - if it's good
enough for my local Saturn dealers to use, it's good enough for me.
