My experience with my SC2 was this- The oil consumption had been slowly going up with organic 10-30 so I decided to try synthetic to see what would happen. I did an oil change with Syntec 10-30 and the rate of oil consumption immediately doubled! I went back to organic and the consumption came back down. Sometime later I tried again, but this time with 5W-50 Syntec. The rate of consumption was more than cut in half, and stayed there for a long time. Eventually it did start to creep up again but it never got back to the same rate as with organic. I parked the car at 150K so I don't know how things would have gone had I continued to drive it, but you get the idea. My car did not smoke at any time (at least not visibly), even with the 10-30 synthetic going through it like crazy. If you're seeing smoke on acceleration the engine may be worn past the point where different oil would help, but it's still worth a try. Based on my experience I would recommend trying the 5-50 synthetic and seeing what happens.
