Hi Steve, Yes, something does need to be attached to the receptor. Either the incident sphere of your spot attachment. There is also a little attachment that comes with the meter that is flat, with a very small hole. I am not sure, but I think this is a broad angle reflective attachment. The only way I ever use the meter is in incident mode. If I need a reflective reading, it comes from the camera.
