I have never heard this term, but I would guess that it referrs to
taking a piece of the film and developing it first to check the color
balance of that particular batch of film. Then any corrections can be made
in the developing to insure a correct color balance.
This method is used by good color labs when making duplicate slides.
That way, it is almost inpossible to detect the quality duplicate slides
from the originials. It also explains why there is a large setup charge,
before they even begin duplicating the slides.
