Related experience with Kodak, which is ironic in view of their stance on copyright elsewhere: I seldom get small prints made from my slides (and shoot slides 99.9 per cent of the time now), however, occasionally, I'll give away a print or two to someone who has done me some favors. Several weeks ago, I sent off a handful of slides to Kodak (from local photo store to Kodak lab in NJ). The order came back in a couple of days with no prints and no explanation, other than a sticker on the envelope saying that it could not be processed and that there was no charge. The store sent it back for another try. This time, they said they would not do the prints because my slides had a copyright stamp on them -- never mind that the copyright and the name of the person ordering the prints was the same. This time they enclosed a form note saying I had to provide a written statement saying that I owned the copyright. Wrote such a note -- and got the prints on the third try. Now, I've sent them slides for prints before, and they never questioned the copyright stamp on the slide mounts. I've been using a copyright notice for more years than I care to remember. They did Christmas cards from a slide just fine, without questioning the copyright notice on the slide I sent them. They returned my note saying I owned the copyright, so obviously they do not keep these on file -- so, in the long run, it's just one extra hassle. -- Ernest P.S.: Have a whole box full of those little pro-rewards tabs clipped from various Kodak boxes. What are they good for, anyway? I must have had something about this a long time ago, but have obviously not kept it. Though I am supposely in Kodak's Pro Passport program, I haven't heard anything from Kodak in well over a year. -- Ernest H.
