In a message dated 97-12-22 22:26:06 EST, you write: << I shot the same BN SD40-2, 8002, in roughly the same location in Marias Pass, two years apart...both times it was the lead unit! >> Actually, Dave has done this twice. In 1991, we encountered a train with 3 SD40-2's (the usual power at this time) at Tamarack, Montana (on the Libby Dam relocation). It was sitting dead and crewless in the siding. The result of this encounter is hanging in the bar at the Izaak Walton Inn. Check it out next time you're there.
The next year, we encountered the same unit, BN SD40-2 6911, in fresh whiteface paint on the point of an eastbound--at Jennings (or River View, depending on whether you're looking at a highway map or a railroad timetable). This is the west end of the Libby Dam relocation, about 15 miles west of Tamarack. We chased this train almost the entire length of the line, as we were headed back to the Izaak Walton anyway. I just checked my file, and we DID shoot it again at Tamarack, about a mile east of the shot the previous year! Merry Christmas, everybody!
