A final thought about the TRAINS photo contest. Remember, I'm in
California and always the last TRAINS subscriber to get his issue each
month. So I haven't seen the winners.

I'm awfully proud of Charlie Dischinger and his third place award,
though...especially since I'm one of the people who prodded him into
first going to Montana several years ago! When I was a kid hanging
around the Frisco Lindenwood Yard in St. Louis, train crews used to tell
me "...you really ought to meet Charlie Dischinger down in
Springfield..." if you want to meet a serious photographer!

I have entered every TRAINS photo contest and have never won anything,
nor do I really expect to. However, some of the discarded photos from
the judging always seem to end up in other photo projects at the
magazine. I have had a TRAINS centerspread, the cover of the TRAINS
calendar and a couple of "photo section" pictures; all were judging
"rejects" that they found some sort of paying use for after the contest.

So, even if you didn't win anything, don't be shocked if your images
aren't returned right away. The "consolation prizes" aren't bad!
