First, I'd like to assure Dave Busse that he is far from the last
subscriber to get his copy of Trains. Based on past performance, Canada
Post should get the April issue to me sometime in 3 to 15 days.

I'm looking forward to seeing Charlie's shot in the photo contest. He
has an eye for unusual light and making the most of it, that fog shot on
the SPORRS page is fabulous, in my mind. I have been fortunate enough to
be out shooting with Charlie in the past, and have learned a thing or two
in the process.

I didn't enter the Trains contest this year for the first time since it's
inception, not because I didn't want to, but because getting the slides
there by an alternate method than Canada Post (on strike at the time),
just didn't seem worth the cost to me. I feel fortunate that one of my
shots was chosen a couple years ago, and it wasn't even a train shot.

Went in and had a look at the SPORRS page for the first time in quite a
while. There's some great new shots there, and I'll get my list of ten
off to Charlie in the next day or so. There are a few shots there in less
than ideal weather and conditions, but there's not anything there showing
railroading topics without the train. Hell, I'm as guilty of shooting that
as the next guy. But, as the people on this list that work the rails
know, there's a lot more to railroading than that.

Here's a challenge for all of you. Next time you're out trackside, look
for some photos of subjects other than just the usual. How about a shot
of a clear signal silhouetted against a sunset? Or a sectionman sitting
on the ballast having lunch? There's tons of possibilities out there.

Anybody up to the challenge? Maybe those who are interested could set a
deadline of June first to get shots to the SPORRS site. Comments?

Jim
