Several have mentioned railfanning around Salt Lake City; I've done it
countless times, including bonzo runs during long Delta layovers there.
Have had three- and five-hour layovers (by design several times) where I
rented a $19.95 special from one of the rental car places tied in to
Delta (to get the 1000 mile f/f rental car bonus), and bombed in and out
of the yards and did lineside action shooting.

Two favorite locations less than 10 mins. from the airport are Lakepoint
(on LA&SL), west of airport, and the north end of the UP SLC yard, where
a medium tele of a n/b train leaving town gives a nice view of the state
capitol bldg.

One time a 90-minute layover turned into a 5-1/2 hour one, due to an
equipment foul-up. Without much prodding, Delta gave me a rental car
voucher instead of the free meal voucher. Did some railfanning on Delta,
got food at McDonalds and yes, got the Delta miles to boot!

Another time I was there, had an afternoon to kill with friends. We took
the free tour of the Mormon temple. Interesting tour, but the best part
is the end, when they ask for your name and address. Naturally, we gave
names and addresses of bosses, ex-girlfriends, colleagues at work, etc.
They all had guys on bicycles knocking on their doors for YEARS!
