I AM a professional railroader! It was just a slip of the tongue.
Locomotive consist is the correct term. The use of the name "motors"
refering to diesel locomotives was common on our railroad. After the
merger this name was banned by managment, but it still came up once in a
while.
Old railroaders do not forget their roots. Many terms and locations used
by them are no longer used on the railroad. When you hear a railroader
use these terms, you know that he has a lot of fuzz.
