Actually, I recall the same nomeclature issue occurring at least a
decade ago in the pages of either R&R or RMC. In one editorial, as I
recall, there was some puzzlement on the use of the word, as it normally
applies to maritime vessels of any sort, as they are literally lashed
together by lines and ropes, and some sort of argument "supposedly"
could be made for locomotive consists because of the lines running
between the units, walkway safety chains, etc.
