I cannot speak for Nikon or other brands, but the Canon EOS 1.4x 
teleconverter is great; I use it often in conjunction with the 300f.4L 
in autofocus mode with fast film (PKL). I would never use an off-brand 
teleconverter...strictly Canon for Canon, Nikon for Nikon, etc.

If I had the 300mm f2.8L lens, I think I'd have both the 2x and 1.4.

On my Arizona trip a few weeks back, the SHOT OF THE TRIP was with this 
300 and 1.4 combination. I'll have to send it to Cohen for scanning and 
critique...
