I thought the quote came from In The Heat of the Night, and was
uttered by Rod Steiger...but hey ho.

I feel some responsibility in all this controversy over railfans and
"pros" and the demise of SOTM, for (a) bringing up the spectre of
shooting trains in the midday sun in my original "Reflecting on the
Quality of Light" message, and (b) the last SOTM vote, where three of
the five "winners", with two votes apiece, were mine.

I have no idea whether I came to the party early enough to be one of
the original 30...don't really care. What I do care about is seeing
some well executed photographs of interesting subjects, and picking
up some tips which will improve my results behind the viewfinder.
However, I did think the idea of SOTM was good...and may be
successful in the future...SPORRS just needs more members so that the
2% who will do more than lurk is a big enough number to get some
statistically reasonable results. 2%, by the way, is about the
average ratio of active posters to lurkers on most CompuServe forums,
including the TrainNet forum which I help to maintain.
