Hello Evan & community members,
I think the organic groups and including the loco's in it might be a
good idea.
That way a Loco can also have some departments or even regions for
bigger countries. Tasks could be specified better and people could be
reached more easily.
Maybe using the organic groups, the LoCo's can be fitted in a sort of a
tree structure, like:
Global > Europe > Some country > Marketing > Design Team
(small country, less subdivisions)
Global > North America > USA > Some state > some city >
Marketing Team (large country, more subdivisions)
or something...
It would also let people start their own initiatives, but contained in
a bigger structure.
One student can start a group at some school for instance.
At the moment, when looking at a certain LoCo, you have a number of
members, but nobody knows what everybody does or you can't specify what
you're good at. You get on the mailing list and that's it. Once you are
on that list, you get the occasional mail of someone telling what's
been going on in the weekend, or another completely off-topic mail.
A lot of energy gets wasted by asking the wrong people the wrong
questions.
As the community grows bigger, we will need a solid base structure, and
I think SpreadUbuntu can play a big role here.
After all, marketing and spreading the word is one of the most
important tasks the community has, next to rolling out superb releases
of course ;)

Hello Steven!
I've noticed the same problem with untranslated pages marked as
translated into a particular language. What you may notice is that the
original material show up if there is no translated version. I thought
that this would be a better way of doing multilingual materials, but
I'm still looking for some input from others on their thoughts.
I think that some usability testing might answer why some people mark
pages as translated when they aren't.
I've thought the same problem about LoCo's. It simply isn't easy for an
excited newcomer to jump in and do some good. One reason this might be
is because of all the disconnected ways to communicate: IRC, forums,
loco websites. Check out my idea about using Drupal's Organic groups
module on SU, and let me know if you think it will help or hurt:

Hello
to the community,
I definitely think things shouldn't be rushed, so if SpreadUbuntu will
be up and running smoothly by the end of september, I think that's great
news. Some of the translations in dutch I did through Launchpad are not
showing. I heard that has something to do with being at Drupal 5.
Now I haven't been active for that long in the community, but I am
determined to stay active for a long time, and hopefully get the member
status in a while. I've been working long hours lately designing some
materials and translating.
I am worried about a couple of things though;
First of all the fact that I see some crap sneaking in. I have even seen
"translated content" that has not been translated at all, but is marked
as translated content.
So please people, if you are translating that's great, but at least
finish the page.
Secondly, I agree that there is a lot of expectations to SpreadUbuntu,
because I think it makes a good base for Marketing materials, and I
think LoCo Teams around the world should bundle efforts.
It's better to have some marketing materials that are great, than have
thousands of crappy ones.
There are just too many materials around which are shouting out the same
message, just because there is no structure at all.
Thirdly;
Now don't get me wrong, people are doing some great work, but some just
try to do their own thing and ignore the rest.
Small bunches of friends start 'owning' Loco Teams and that worries me.
That is one reason why I post to spreadubuntu and send a link to the
LoCo. Not all Locos have a marketing section.
At some LoCo teams, I have got the feeling there is a big sign on the
door which says "no access for serious and active newcomers, we're just
doing our own thing here".
And that's why I think SpreadUbuntu will be great in the future.
We have to be careful though, SpreadUbuntu will be the biggest source
for anyone trying to spread Ubuntu.
And I do mean anyone, so it will have to be very well structured.
Anyone with some thoughts on this?
Steven.
