Well if it was allowed in 85' it was allowed in earlier editions. Most
likely they were still on an older edition like the 83' or earlier. We are
tying on the feed main off the riser and sprinklering a new addition with a
tree system. The existing grid system is not being altered and is up to the
AHJ and owner if they want anything about the fact it's a grid. No plans or
original contractor info are available.

The other side of this "Sticky" question is what code the AHj was using at 
the time the design/layout and installation were approved. In 1985, it could

have been a much older version of 13. (This is Mote, with David's info below

but always worth remembering.)
The follow up is always "It was approved by the AHJ" at the time, so did 
they knowingly make an AHJ allowed "Exception" or simply miss it in review? 
If review was even required?

Every "OLD" system seems to create as many questions as opportunities.
