The only problem I see Thom is that I am sure we have all seen systems
that were frozen but not broken so now we are back in the situation
where the system is impaired without anyone knowing. I don't like it we
do not use it at all.

I personally don't like heat tape as the "Freeze Protection" however
that being said, "Who would know?" The Owner, The Fire Dept. The
Sprinkler Contractor The alarm company and more. True this would only be
after a freeze and break, so the alarms sounded, but this doesn't seem a
whole lot different than what we see all the time with owners,"Guessing
that it will stay above freezing in a particular area" And then there is
the contractors out, "Owner shall maintain space at 40'F" of course if
your putting heat tape on the pipe, there's a pretty good indication
that the owner doesn't intend to keep it at 40'F.

The other issue is that fact that these systems were not supervised. A
break in the line at any point would render the system beyond that point
inoperable and who would know? If the system didn't function at all,
who would know? No way to insure operability.

Past conversations with NFPA and others informed me that heat trace was
originally prohibited due to the thought that it could fuse the
sprinklers.
NFPA admitted that to their knowledge heat tape had never done fused a
sprinkler and they were aware that there was a lot of heat tape in
service on branchlines throughout the country.

We just did a job where we used Chromalox products and learned a great
deal.
It is supposed to be around 100 deg max but under the worst conditions
it will not exceed 150 deg. We are only using 3 watts per foot however
and the temp varies accordingly from what I understand.

We have used it once before and had no trouble whatsoever.

Subject: Electric Heat Tracing - Background

Hello again all,

Im looking for the wisdom and experiences off the list for projects that
used electric heat tape for freeze protection. I currently have a
13R-2002 (metallic piped) project where the owner is looking to use the
Raychem XL Self Regulating heat trace for supplemental freeze
protection. The piping will be insulated as per the code but they want
a belt and suspenders.

Im looking for the code background as to why the appendix specifically
prohibits branchlines - rather forceful language I thought to be in the
appendix and not the code itself but oh well. The project natually is
looking to heat trace the crossmains and branches up to the drops for
the concealed pendants in the living space, hence my concern.

The product is reportedly listed UL for Fire Protection piping but I am
still awaiting all of that submission, in the mean time I need to
educate myself as to the why's and why not's in the code and branchline
prohibition.

Thank you once again.
