Very wrong. I'd love you or those like you to be AHJ's. I can compete on a level playing field. I can't compete with stupid. Although there are many recent days when I wish I was just existing without a clue. When the AHJ lets others get away without following the code it's not level and heavily favors those that don't do it right either by choice or ignorance. Sidebar: I finally figured out how to price against a certain competitor - First I put it together as we normally would knowing costs and past performance on similar jobs then delete ALL margin on materials, delete ALL profit and overhead and reduce labor, fabrication and design time by 20%-30% Then there is the whole public safety aspect of making sure it complies with code. We'll have many, many less failures of our systems if it's done right (and the valve is open). There is a lot of ugly out there that is going to someday bite us you know where. What's going to happen when we start having major losses on a regular basis and a few deaths in fully sprinklered buildings? The pendulum will swing back towards less sprinklers and more fire alarms and structural fire protection. The only way we keep the more sprinklers is to keep failures to a minimum. Now the caveat is follow the code both its good and bad. Sometimes those from the design side have a tendency to want more because that's the way they think it should be done because it's better, they'd do it that way or whatever. It's hard to leave the design responsibility up to others when you are in the AHJ role. I can't possibly overstate the need for knowledgeable people on the AHJ side. And for the local lurkers (several AHJ's) I know that are out there I'm not speaking of you. You are ahead of the curve. Chris Cahill, P.E. Craig, Come work with us inspectors. Someone once told me I should write a book. I replied if I did it would be categorized "fiction" since no one would believe these things really go on. The sad part is that there are those that understand the critical nature of fire protection work and those that treat it otherwise. I got an e-mail this morning asking about a thrust restraint on an underground installation. This is one of those where I wish we could post pictures because it's almost unbelievable. At the end of what looks like a 8" or 10" main there is a metal fence post driven into the ground. This is one of those green ones that you use to string wire between like for a garden or for livestock. About 3-4 foot behind it, along the pipe run, there's another. Between the two it looks like some 12 ga. Solid wire tying them together. OH, That'll work! NOT! Ok, we know the installer was definitely not following that whatchmacallit FPnA code or whatever it is, but also who approved the installation? The bigger question comes to mind of whether the rest of the system was restrained properly. Someone does not have an enviable task ahead of them. What a way to start the day. Just unbelievable.
